A great phone option for a younger child (under 13) is the Pinwheel phone. It allows you to gradually add vetted apps and features beyond phone calls and texts as the child becomes ready.
Whether you purchase a new phone or give your child one of your old ones, you should make sure that you have monitoring capability through a service such as Bark, and teach your child how to interact safely with others online.
